 7 About Byte-serving Function

7-1 What is Byte-serving?

When a DocuWorks file on the website contains many pages, it may take a long time to download and display the entire file. Use of the byte-serving function will reduce the display time by downloading only pages required for display if the file size is larger than specified.

7-2 Operations Affected by Byte-serving

When the byte-serving function is activated, partial download is performed to display a DocuWorks file, to navigate pages, to display link destinations, to print the file, and to save the file.

When viewing the same page, the saved temporary file will be displayed to reduce the display time unless the real file on the website is updated. The temporary files of this type are not those used by the browser's cache function. When [Download all data] is selected, however, no temporary files of this type are created and the browser's cache function is activated.
[Maximum size]
Specify the maximum total size of the temporary files. When this maximum size is exceeded, the temporary files are deleted starting with the one with the oldest creation date. The available size range is 0 through 99 MB. The default size is 50 MB.

9 Displaying DocuWorks Files Embedded in HTML

Use the following tag to embed DocuWorks files into HTML.
<EMBED Attribute="Value"></EMBED>

The attribute and value must be specified as follows:
AttributeValue
SRCName of DocuWorks file to embed
WIDTHWidth of the DocuWorks file, in pixels (If omitted, depends on browser)
HEIGHTHeight of the DocuWorks file, in pixels (If omitted, depends on browser)
PAGEPages of the DocuWorks file (If omitted, page 1)
SHEAFName of the document in the binder (If omitted, none)

For example, the following tag embed the SAMPLE.XDW file into HTML.
<EMBED SRC="sample.xdw" WIDTH="300" HEIGHT="300"></EMBED>

If WIDTH is between 65 and 2488 pixels, and HEIGHT is between 90 and 3518 pixels, then embedded file (A4, Portrait) will be displayed correctly. If the % parameter can be used to specify WIDTH and HEIGHT, then the document size will be adjusted to the size of the window when displayed, or size of the paper when printed.

 11 Notes and Restrictions

The following covers notes and restrictions on operating Viewer Light for Web. The system errors described in this documentation refers to application errors and faults that cause the window to close or Windows® to crash. The notes and restrictions are divided into the following six sections: "Installation", "Operation", "Displaying and Printing", "Printer Driver Settings", "Memory and Performance", and "Byte-serving".
11-1 Installation
11-2 Operation
11-3 Displaying and Printing
11-4 Printer Driver Settings
11-5 Memory and Performance
11-6 Byte-serving

11-1 Installation

With Viewer Light for Web installed, if you uninstall the DocuWorks software, Internet Explorer 4.0x/5.0x/5.5x/6.0x will fail to display DocuWorks files. In this case, Viewer Light for Web will operate normally if it is reinstalled. (5759)

11-2 Operation

In Internet Explorer 3.0x, you cannot use the keyboard to turn pages, whether in full screen view or embedded view. (1828)

In Netscape Navigator 4.0x and Netscape Communicator 4.0x, if you click the X button on the [Print Preview] window, the browser will abort. To avoid this problem, be sure to close the [Print Preview] window clicking the [Close] button instead. (1830)

In Internet Explorer 4.0x/5.0x/5.5x/6.0x, when you try to open a DocuWorks file using the Open command from the File menu, the following will occur:

In Netscape Navigator 3.0x, if you log off Windows® with the DocuWorks file still displayed in full screen view or embedded view, the browser will abort. Therefore, be sure to close the browser before logging off Windows®. (2268)

In Netscape Navigator, Netscape Communicator and Internet Explorer, when the embedded page in display is being printed, using the Return or Reload command from the shortcut menu in the browser window will cause the browser to abort. Therefore, wait until the[ Print] dialog box is closed. (2284)

In Viewer Light for Web, depending on the browser you are using, you may not be able to open the link target of a link annotation if you specify DocuWorks file as the link target using local path or UNC path in the [Link Properties] dialog box. (4167)

Depending on the application, the printing may be processed in the different order from the displayed text order. Because the text information within the DocuWorks document converted from those applications is held in a different order from the displayed text order, the search result may not be in the displayed order. (5572)

While downloading data with Netscape Navigator/Communicator, if you click [Cancel] on the dialog box that shows the progress of the download, the status bar and the [Stop] button on Netscape Navigator/Communicator will not be updated. (5640)

When viewing a site with CGI using Internet Explorer 4.0x/5.0x/5.5x/6.0x, if you change the page of the document on display with the [Back] or [Next] button on Internet Explorer, you may see the message "The specified file is not a DocuWorks document." In this case, select [Download all data] on the [DocuWorks Viewer Light Control Setting] dialog box. (5731)

If you access a Web server with Netscape Navigator/Communicator and try to view a DocuWorks file on the server, you may see the message "The specified file is not a DocuWorks document." and fail to view the DocuWorks file. In this case, select [Download all data] on the [DocuWorks Viewer Light for Web Setting] dialog box. (5734)

If the browser software on Windows NT® 4.0, Windows® 2000, or Windows® XP does not use a proxy server, the following troubles may occur:

Depending on the settings of applications or fonts, characters may be printed as images. If this happens, the converted DocuWorks documents hold no text information and so cannot be searched using text search. (6537)

You cannot cancel the capture image operation in progress under Netscape Navigator or Communicator. (7564)

Toolbars, status bar, and the like are not displayed when using Internet Explorer 3. Also, the [Document Properties] dialog box and the [DocuWorks Viewer Light Control Options] dialog box are not displayed. (8165)

11-3 Displaying and Printing

In Netscape Navigator 3.0x, after print preview, you must refresh the window to display the embedded DocuWorks file again. In Netscape Navigator 4.0x and Netscape Communicator 4.0x, after print preview, even if you refresh the window, the embedded DocuWorks file will not be displayed. (2213)

When the display is switched from embedded view to full screen view, the first page will be displayed at 100% zoom ratio, and annotation display will always be turned on. (2216)

In Netscape Navigator 3.0x, if a DocuWorks file in display is embedded in HTML with its WIDTH and HEIGHT attributes of the EMBED tag not specified or set to 0, when you print or preview the page, the browser will abort. (2307)

In the following cases, a DocuWorks file embedded in HTML may be displayed or printed as "X" at the location where it is embedded:

If this happens, reduce the values of WIDTH and HEIGHT. (2321)

If a DocuWorks file includes lines other than solid line (such as dotted lines and broken lines) created in Windows NT® 4.0, Windows® 2000, or Windows® XP, when you display or copy the file in Windows® 95, Windows® 98, or Windows® Me, the lines may turn to solid lines or the space between the dots or broken lines may change. (4863)

If you specify the URL of a DocuWorks file starting with "ftp://" on Netscape Navigator/Communicator, Viewer Light for Web cannot open the file as a DocuWorks file. (5719)

If you open and print a rotated DocuWorks file with Excel 2000 on Windows NT® 4.0, Windows® 2000, or Windows® XP, Excel 2000 will print the file with its character strings not rotated due to the restrictions of Excel 2000. (5744)

In Netscape Navigator 3.0x, when the display is switched from embedded view to full screen view, Netscape Navigator 3.0x will force quit. (6604)

Depending on the display card used, the right edge of the body text may not be displayed in specific zoom ratio. If this happens, change the performance settings of the display card. (6992)

When you display or print a DocuWorks document created by PowerPoint or the like under Windows® 95, Windows® 98, or Windows® Me, textures and shading may be displayed or printed in different pattern from that in the original document. (7538)

When you print a DocuWorks document created from a Lotus SuperOffice file under Windows NT® 4.0, Windows® 2000, or Windows® XP, white lines may be inserted in the gradation. (7601)

Under Windows NT® 4.0, Windows® 2000, or Windows® XP, when you display a DocuWorks document created from a Quark Xpress file in which images are rotated and pasted, white lines may be inserted in the images. (7618)

Under Windows NT® 4.0, Windows® 2000, or Windows® XP, when you display and/or print a DocuWorks document created from a Quark Xpress file in which images are rotated and pasted, small black dots may be displayed and/or printed in parts of the images. (7622)

11-4 Printer Driver Settings

In Netscape Navigator/Communicator 4.0x, or Internet Explorer 4.0x/5.0x, when you try to print using the Print icon of the browser or the [Print ]command from the [File] menu, the DocuWorks file in embedded view will not be printed. (1832, 5626)

To print a DocuWorks file, when in embedded view use the [Print] command from the shortcut menu, or when in full screen view use the [Print] command from the shortcut menu or the Print toolbar icon of DocuWorks. (1833)

When a document page displayed in full screen view is printed (using the Print toolbar icon or the [Print] command from the [File] menu of the browser), the following problems will occur:

In the [Print] dialog box, if you specify the number of copies to print to be less than 0, then depending on the OS the following error message will appear:

Be sure to enter the number of copies within the valid range. (2229)

In Internet Explorer 4.0x or 5.0x, if you print a Web page which is linked (or anchored) to DocuWorks file with "Print all linked documents" checked in the Print dialog box, all of the DocuWorks files will be printed as binary data. (5074)

When a DocuWorks file is opened on Internet Explorer 5.5x/6.0x, you cannot successfully see its print preview and print it from the preview window. (5775)

11-5 Memory and Performance

The number of DocuWorks files that can be displayed in embedded view in a page depends on the memory and disk space of the client machine. Therefore, be careful with the resources when viewing pages with many embedded DocuWorks files. (2290)

11-6 Byte-serving

If an HTML file has four or more DocuWorks files embedded, the byte-serving function of Netscape Navigator/Communicator does not work. (5627)

In the environment where the Web server is a Netscape Enterprise server and its client is Internet Explorer 4.0 or later, all the pages will be downloaded even if the byte-serving function is activated on the client. (5751)

You may not be able to open a DocuWorks document stored in a Lotus Domino server with Netscape or Internet Explorer 3. In this case, specify [Download all data] on the [DocuWorks Viewer Light for Web] dialog box or use Internet Explorer 4.0 or later. (6366)
